The saying goes, you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but with a new brain-friendly cake perhaps you just can.

With the Festive Season almost here, you might not want to think about the impact on your waistline. How often are we told that we should stop eating cake and sugar, to lose weight or improve our health?

But for those who like a piece of cake, the good news is that a recent collaboration by Meals on Wheels NSW has developed a “brain-friendly cake”.

This collaboration produced a cake which uses ingredients that are beneficial to the brain. In its development, considerations were given to not only the ingredients but also to texture, to help people who may have difficulty with swallowing.

Certain foods may have some direct neuroprotective properties and this cake is made using those such ingredients. While diet alone won’t dramatically improve brain health, changing to a healthier diet is likely to have benefits over time for health and well-being.

The invention of this cake also shines a spotlight on the more than 400,000 Australians who are currently living with cognitive impairment and dementia. While this may appear a high number already, the estimates are that over the next 25 years, this number will grow to 900,000 Australians.

So what’s in ‘The Unforgettable Cake’? It is made using natural ingredients such as beetroot, spinach, turmeric, olive oil and blueberries which all have brain-friendly properties. It also uses honey (a sweetener with anti-inflammatory qualities) and vanilla ermine frosting.

The effect of the cake has not been clinically tested, but these ingredients all have known properties that can help with brain function and health, as well as taste delicious.
So there you have it – you can have cake and eat it too.

While we can’t make the cake for you, if you have concerns around an aged care need and want to start planning to understand your options and the financial implications, contact us today on <phone number> to make an appointment.
